The power of a GOOD book cover

We live in a world where everyone tries to say that we don’t judge… judge others on how they dress/speak/act; judge companies for the employees they have and their customer service mishaps; and judge books by their covers.  But guess what?  I’ll let you in on a little secret:  we DO judge!

Aw, come on, if you don’t think so, remember the last time you opened your mailbox and found a postcard, a commercial postcard.  Did you read it?  If you’re like most of us, you barely gave it a glance before deciding it was junk that needed to go away.  Only if it had some very eye-catching graphics/design/image did you stop for a moment, right?  I hate to say it, but the same goes for your book and its cover.

Your book covers mission is to pull potential readers in.  If it cannot attract attention, then why even have it?  Honestly, the reason most books fail is because its author didn’t devote enough care to their covers.

What do you mean, “enough care”?

I mean they didn’t put the cover second-second only after the content of the book.  Now for an ugly truth… great book covers aren’t cheap.  Yeah, you can make a go of it yourself, but trust me, as a former professional graphic designer, it takes a special eye to put together a cover that would fit on the best-sellers list.  There is a reason designers go to school and get certifications in expensive software.

What about Fiverr?  What about it?  I have found maybe one or two designers that were decent at cover design, but most have no idea how to put together a striking cover composition and work with text to make it stand out from the rest of the do-it-yourself crowd.

Don’t be that author.  Do yourself a favor and invest in a good cover!  (that is if you want your book to sell!)  A great cover and a developmental edit are worth more than you can imagine yet many authors don’t get them.

Please, for the love of Pete, don’t waste your time on a cheap cover.  All of your hard work deserves a cover that is as great as your tale, right?

Give your story the best chance it possibly can have by dressing it in a beautiful cover.
